In 2010, the popular show Parks and Recreation popularised the term Galentine's Day. This "holiday" takes place on February 13th, the day before Valentine's Day, every year. This day is meant to be a celebration of female friendship. Although we should celebrate our friendship year-round, I feel like this day marks a great occasion to really show and tell your girlfriends how much you love them. We don't need a holiday to show others how much we appreciate them, but a special day is a great reason to do so.
This year, a few of my friends and I got together on Saturday, February 15th to celebrate this special day. Our plans started as just a girls night, but it then turned into a special occasion. There was something so special about that night and I just had to share it with you.
My friend Marie is an amazing host and always goes the extra mile to make everyone feel special. You could say she's a little "extra", in the best possible way. She can be a walking-pinterest. It all started with her getting us all satin kimonos to get ready in (yes, like bridal parties do) and decorating with cute streamers and a rose-gold "love" balloon. She got Valentine's Day treats and heart shaped lollipops. She really added that extra cute touch on the entire afternoon and evening.
We got together mid-afternoon and played games with snacks and did some skin pampering with facemasks. Throughout the afternoon and evening, her husband was around to take cute candid photos which will make awesome memories to look back on. In the evening, we all got ready to go out, doing each others hair and makeup. We took some cute group photos and headed out to a bar for some drinks and dancing.
I always love a good girls night. No boyfriends or husbands (other than our communal Insta-husband Brad) and just being with the girls. What made this one that much more fun is that rather than going over to get ready and drink before going out, we spent a few extra hours between girls, talking and just having a good time.
As it turns out, Galentine's Day is so much fun. As I said, we shouldn't NEED an occasion to celebrate our friendships, but I think that it's really fun to make a point of doing something big with all your friends and really just celebrate that friendship on another level. This celebration can be done with getting each other a little gift, going out for dinner, a girls night, moving night or really whatever. But I think that our format was really just the best. Pampering, girl talks and dancing with your girlfriends makes for a great day. I strongly recommend any of you ladies to make a point of getting together with your closest girlfriends and celebrating. One thing I know is that moving forward, Galentine's Day will definitely become an important tradition in my group of friends.
